My name is Emma Smart and I am a Sydney-based visual communications designer, specialising in publication and typographic design, as well as branding, visual identity, and storytelling. My design is playful and thoughtful, with a deep appreciation for beauty and the natural world. I like to bring a hand-drawn, raw aesthetic to digital projects and I don’t see a contradiction between functionality and fun. I care about the way my work impacts the world and other people.

MY WORK
Click the underlined link for more details on each project.

1. Pickled Magazine
Printed Publication
UTS University Project
2024

A conceptual magazine project called ‘Pickled’, made with hand-drawn and stamped imagery. The idea was to produce an aesthetic that layered letters and words to show ideas of typography ‘fermenting’ together, exploring how design and typesetting adds critical meaning to writing and text.

2. Orchard
Food Packaging and Branding
UTS University Project
2024

Food packing project I called Orchard for chocolate bars with a textured and natural aesthetic. I wanted to highlight the brand’s commitment to sustainability and natural ingredients and flavors.

3. CassiopeaMotion animated video
UTS University Project
2024

A motion project responding to the research of Dr. Claire Rowe, focusing on Upside Down Jellyfish. The project considered the problem of ‘Jellification’, the unnatural spread of jellyfish as a result of climate change and human impact on the environment, creating a sense of being overwhelmed through the use of animation.

4. SWOP Brochure and Poster
UTS University Project
Printed Flyer / Poster Fold
2024

A flyer and poster project for a SWOP clothing market using risograph printing and hand-drawn illustration.

5. Bugmy Bar Book Brand
UTS University Project
Bugmy Bar Book Brand Refresh
2025

A group project to create a suit of assets for the Bugmy Bar Book and effectively convey their
purpose, helping to spread awareness of the Bugmy Bar Book as a valuable resource for legal
practitioners. This project was a collaboration with myself, Nero Cohglan, Wesley Ng, Christopher Georges and Shangliu Sai and built off the existing branding of the Bugmy Bar Book.

6. The Lazy Jellyfish
UTS University Project
Collage Illustration
2024

A collaged illustration project called ‘The Lazy Jellyfish’ which responds to the research of Dr. Claire Rowe, focusing on Upside Down Jellyfish and aiming to convey scientific research in a digestible and playful way.
